Panthers Vs Jets: Winnipeg hosts Florida with Morrissey still out

The Winnipeg Jets walked into game day still looking for a reset, and they did it with Josh Morrissey and Vlad Namestnikov both unavailable. Winnipeg had dropped into a five-game winless skid after a 2-1 loss to the Canadiens in the Heritage Classic in Winnipeg, and the next test was a visit from Florida at 7 PM CT.

That is why Panthers Vs Jets was being searched before puck drop. The Jets had the previous day off to clear their heads, but the lineup remained in flux: Morrissey had been out for almost three weeks, Namestnikov for close to two, and both injuries were still listed week-to-week. For a club trying to stop the slide, that mattered as much as the opponent across the ice.

The projected Winnipeg group showed how much was being asked of the healthy bodies left in the room. Connor, Scheifele, Perfetti, Rosen, Lowry, Vilardi, Iafallo, Bjorck, Mercer, Koepke, Barron and Lambert were set up front, with Samberg and Pionk, Salomonsson and DeMelo, and Ferraro and Bauer on defense. Florida came in after a 3-2 victory over Chicago two days earlier, with Tkachuk, Bennett, Verhaeghe, Reinhart, Vilmanis, Luostarinen, Lundell, Eller, Imama, Schwindt and Hathaway up front and Forsling and Ekblad, Mikkola and Jones, and Kulikov and Gudas on the blue line.

The problem for Winnipeg was not mystery, but margin. The Jets had not won in five straight, going 0-3-2, and the fixes were plain enough: a more complete effort, better power-play finishing and fewer costly mistakes. That is the part of the night that could not be patched over by rest alone, because Florida arrived fresh enough to punish lapses and Winnipeg was still missing two players who normally help steady the game.

So the next step was simple, even if the solution was not. Winnipeg needed the kind of performance that turns a break in the schedule into a turnaround, and it had to do it without knowing when Morrissey or Namestnikov would be back. Until that answer came, the Jets were left to prove they could survive the gap on their own.
