Bill Cowher went on CBS during Sunday of Week 7 and made the case that Nick Sirianni deserves more time after the Philadelphia Eagles dropped to 2-4 and lost four straight games. The public defense landed at a low point for the Eagles, who were below.500 for the first time under Sirianni.
Cowher did not frame the season as lost. He said the Eagles were not out of the playoff scenario one bit and urged patience with a coach he described as a winner. That mattered because the criticism had sharpened as the results worsened, and Sirianni was suddenly facing questions that had not followed him through most of his run in Philadelphia.
The numbers are what make the argument land. Cowher pointed out that Sirianni had been to the playoffs five straight years, reached two Super Bowls and won one, while also helping three assistant coaches become head coaches. He also said Sirianni had the kind of presence that can pull a room together, the sort of coach who tells players what they need to hear rather than what they want to hear.
There was also a reason the defense felt timed to the moment rather than like routine praise. Jalen Hurts was out for the year because of blood clots, which left the Eagles trying to adjust without their quarterback at the same time the team was going through a revamped offensive line. Cowher noted that Sirianni was working with a 34-year-old offensive coordinator who was calling plays for the first time only three years into his coaching career, and he compared that challenge with his own years of turnover after early success.
The friction point is that none of Cowher’s praise changes the record. The Eagles are 2-4, they have lost four straight, and they are carrying the kind of pressure that usually follows a collapse, not a slump. Even so, Cowher’s view was clear: give this guy a chance, because the season is not over and Sirianni has already shown he can steady a team through harder stretches than this one.
That test comes immediately. The Eagles are set to play the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night, a game that can either buy Sirianni breathing room or deepen the questions around him before October ends.
