The Phoenix Suns head into Suns Vs Thunder in Oklahoma City with a simple test in front of them: can they turn one big win into a cleaner habit? Phoenix is 1-1, Oklahoma City is 3-0, and the matchup arrives with the Thunder already carrying the look of a team that can punish mistakes.

Devin Booker gave Phoenix the kind of lift it needs on Saturday night, finishing with 43 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in a win over the Warriors. That kind of line can cover a lot, but it does not hide the bigger issue around him. The Suns have started games slowly, have not consistently matched the effort needed for this roster to work, ranked 26th in defensive rebounding after two games and, as of Sunday, were last in the NBA in passes made per game at 230, well below the league median of 294.

That is why this game matters more than a record check. Last year’s playoffs ended with Oklahoma City sweeping Phoenix, and the Thunder have built their early momentum even while dealing with injuries. The matchup now is not just about whether the Suns can keep pace with a team that opened 3-0. It is about whether they can defend the glass, move the ball with more purpose and stop putting Booker in a position where he has to create nearly everything himself.

Oklahoma City’s injury list adds another layer, but it does not change what the Suns are chasing. Jalen Williams was carted off in the fourth quarter of Sunday night’s win over the Clippers, and the Thunder also lost several other rotation players in that game. That leaves uncertainty around availability, especially with Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein and rookie Aday Mara all part of the rotation, including a lineup built around three 7-foot-plus players. Still, Phoenix’s first task is internal: better effort, better rebounding and better ball movement. If those pieces are still missing, the opponent’s injuries may not matter much.

The Suns have already shown they can get one explosive night from Booker. The next step is proving they can make that kind of performance part of a team identity, not a rescue plan.
