Eagles Starting Qb Joe Milton III joins Philadelphia before Cowboys game

Joe Milton III changed uniforms last Friday, joining the Philadelphia Eagles from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad just days before they meet on Monday Night Football. He is now trying to catch up fast as the Eagles prepare for Dallas at Lincoln Financial Field.

That is the part that makes the move matter now. Milton is not arriving as a long-term project or a quiet depth piece. He is walking into a rivalry week with the kind of timing that forces everyone to notice, and he said after practice on Thursday that he is wearing another color now and cannot wear blue this week.

Milton said he learned a lot while with Dallas and that development has gone well, but the change still came with a jolt. His agent called him with the news, and he said he went to practice like it was a normal day, trying to operate as a Dallas Cowboy before everything shifted on the ride home. By the time he got in the car, he said, the question was no longer whether the situation had changed. It was whether he would stay on the practice squad or show up for the opportunity in front of him.

He chose the opportunity. Milton said Eagles quarterbacks coach Parks Frazier helped him adjust, and he also praised Sean Mannion for the work going on behind the scenes as he learns the offense. He said he is still on his second week of learning the playbook, taking notes again and trying to get comfortable in Philadelphia’s system while the clock runs toward kickoff.

The move also comes with a built-in irony. The Cowboys traded for Milton during the 2025 offseason to back up Dak Prescott, and he spent this year on Dallas’ practice squad before Philadelphia signed him. That makes him one of the Eagles’ newest faces and, at the same time, one of the players in the building most familiar with the team they are about to face.

Milton’s path has been unusual even before this week. The Patriots took him in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and he later led them to a Week 18 win at the end of his rookie year in place of an injured Drake Maye. He is 6-foot-5, ran a 4.62 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine and once tied Josh Allen for the fastest-recorded throw speed in Combine history at 62 miles an hour. That kind of raw profile is part of why the Eagles moved quickly to add him, even if the timing means he is learning on the fly.

What remains unclear is how much of a role he will have against the Cowboys. The Eagles are not adding him for nostalgia, and they are not treating this like a simple roster shuffle. They signed a quarterback who knows Dallas, dropped him into a rivalry week and asked him to absorb Philadelphia’s offense before the teams meet. That is the real story of the week: Milton is no longer trying to survive in the Cowboys’ system. He is trying to prove he belongs in the one he just joined.
