Xabi Alonso has made clear that Geovany Quenda is among the Chelsea players feeling the strain of limited minutes, even as the team keeps winning with a settled side. The message was blunt: disappointment is normal, but the next chance will come only if those on the margins are ready to take it.
That matters now because Chelsea are heading into a week with three games, and Quenda is one of the players most likely to be waiting for a call. He and Estevao have already spoken about wanting to prove themselves on the pitch, but the reality at Chelsea has been fewer openings than they would like.
Alonso did not dress it up. He said players who have not featured for a few games are bound to feel unhappy, and that this is not difficult to understand. He said the job for those players is to believe they will matter at some stage and to be prepared whenever that moment arrives. He added that the squad is training well and that he is confident anyone asked to play will be ready.
The numbers back up the picture. Chelsea have used 25 different players in the Premier League this season, fewer than Crystal Palace, who have used 27. They have also made 33 substitutions, which puts them joint-sixth in the league, while Hull City lead the way with 36. Even so, Chelsea are one of only five teams yet to score through a substitute, which shows how little impact the bench has had so far.
That lack of rotation has helped Chelsea keep a stable starting XI in recent weeks, and the absence of European football has made it easier to keep the same core on the pitch. For players like Quenda, that continuity is both a strength and a roadblock. The team is functioning well, but that success leaves fewer minutes to spread around, and more frustration for those trying to break through.
There should be some room for change this week, though not necessarily all at once. Chelsea are expected to stick with mostly the same starting XI used against Everton for Saturday's derby against Tottenham Hotspur, but there could be fresher legs against Liverpool and Manchester United. For Quenda, the next test is not whether the chance will exist. It is whether he is in the right place when it does.
