East Manhattan Boulevard is closed between New York Avenue and Wallace Boulevard after a CSX train derailed in Toledo on Friday, and the road is expected to stay shut for two to three days. No one was injured, and no fuel or chemicals were spilled.
John Kaminski said the train had the engine and three cars behind it leave the tracks, with the cars staying upright while the engine leaned to its left. The engine was carrying 4,000 gallons of diesel, but that load did not leak out, easing what could have been a far worse scene.
The closure matters because it cuts through a busy stretch in Toledo at the moment crews are still working around the tracks. Drivers in the Toledo area were told to use alternate routes and avoid the area, while a Toledo Police officer at the scene said part of the tracks will be closed off for awhile.
The unanswered piece is what caused the derailment in the first place. For now, the practical answer is simple: East Manhattan Boulevard will stay closed until the cleanup is finished and the tracks are ready to reopen, but there is no firm time for that yet.
