Tom Arnold Response To Roseanne Barr After Writing-Credits Defense

Tom Arnold answered Roseanne Barr on X the same day she publicly defended him, turning a long-running dispute over Roseanne writing credits back into a fresh public fight. Barr said in an interview published October 20 that Arnold was telling the truth for once, and Arnold replied that she had been forced to say something almost nice about him.

The exchange matters because the argument is not just about old jokes or old marriage. It is about who wrote what on one of television’s biggest sitcoms, and whether Arnold was a real part of the room or just a name attached after the fact. Barr said, “Unbelievably — I don't think you'll hear me say this often — but Tom Arnold is telling the truth for once,” and then added that defending her meant he had done something right by her for the first time in her life.

Arnold used X to frame the moment as a personal victory and a kind of prophecy fulfilled. “33 years ago I predicted I would do something so cool my 1st X Wife Roseanne would be forced to say something almost nice about me. Hell finally froze over today,” he wrote. He also posted, “Don't give up. Don't ever give up.”

That response landed after Arnold had already pushed back on a separate version of the story. In an interview published October 15, he said he would never put his name on a script that Chuck Lorre wrote, and described his work on the show as a loose, collaborative process. “Roseanne and I sat around talking about what we wanted to do in the next season, or maybe some ideas we had that'd be fun episodes, or groundbreaking, or whatever our bulls*** was, and I'd write them down,” he said. “We kind of doodled around.”

That account cuts against Lorre’s memoir claim that Arnold was credited on scripts written by other writers. It also keeps the focus on a question that still has not been answered publicly: which specific scripts are being argued over. Arnold was a writer and producer on Roseanne and also played Arnie Thomas, while Barr and Arnold were married from 1990 to 1994 during the show’s run from 1988 to 1997. The revival later premiered in March 2018, was cancelled in May 2018 after Barr was fired for posting a racist Tweet, and The Conners went on without her from October 2018 through April 2025. For now, Barr’s defense and Arnold’s response have reopened the same old credit fight, but the precise scripts at the center of it remain unnamed.
