DC Comics has set Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos for January 20, 2027, locking in a new six-part Elseworlds run with Hal Jordan at the center. The first issue, a 32-page debut, arrives as DC pushes its Green Lantern line into a harsher corner of its universe.
That is why readers are looking at this now: the book has a date, a creative team and a clear premise. Dan Watters is writing the series, with Kyle Hotz on art, Dan Brown on colors and Steve Wands on lettering, while Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos #1 gets variant covers by Björn Barends, Steve Beach and Ashley Wood, plus a foil variant by Barends.
The setup is brutal even by Green Lantern standards. Hal Jordan is sent across a war-torn universe where humanity has conquered the stars and become a scourge upon them, with the Green Lantern Corps standing as the only force in the way of that conquest. The official synopsis says he was betrayed by Oliver Queen and left for dead on an alien world, then rescued and deprogrammed by the Corps. From there, he becomes the Corps’ only human warrior and a powerful strategic weapon in a fight that is no longer about defending people like him.
That inversion is the story’s sharpest break from the usual mythology. Jordan once fought as a soldier on behalf of humanity; here he is fighting for the Green Lantern Corps against humankind. Because the series is under the Elseworlds imprint, it is built to sit outside main continuity, which gives DC room to push the premise darker and stranger than its core books. The synopsis promises a run through the burning ruins of a DC Universe unlike any readers have seen before, with Jordan even taking the battle to the shores of Hell itself.
For DC, the immediate next step is simple: issue No. 1 on January 20, 2027. After that, the real question is how far the series goes in turning Hal Jordan from Earth’s protector into the weapon used against it, and whether Oliver Queen’s betrayal is the spark that makes that reversal possible.
