Pooh Shiesty’s lawyer asked a court on Thursday, Oct. 15, to order changes to the rapper’s confinement at the Rolling Plains Regional Detention Center in Haskell, Texas, where he says the pretrial detainee has been kept in his cell for about 23 hours a day. The filing also seeks more visitation time after the facility cut short a family visit in August.
The motion says Shiesty, who has not been convicted of the charges against him, has faced the restrictions despite having no disciplinary infractions at the facility. His attorney is asking the court to require the U.S. Marshals Service to address the conditions of confinement and to give him at least four hours of visitation per month, rather than the two-hour monthly limit described in the filing.
That push comes after Shiesty’s family traveled from Memphis, Tenn., to see him on Aug. 27, only to have the visit end after about an hour because the facility enforces the monthly cap. The filing says his girlfriend had already used one hour of that allowance earlier in the month, leaving little room for the family visit that followed.
His lawyer says the center has never given an individualized, documented explanation for the isolation beyond saying he is being protected. That matters because the requested restriction is not framed as punishment alone: for a pretrial detainee, the attorney argues, near-continuous cell confinement without a documented security or disciplinary reason can cross the line into a due process problem, especially when the filing says the isolation is causing increasing anxiety and difficulty sleeping.
Shiesty remains behind bars while the case moves toward trial, and the court now has a narrower question in front of it than the criminal case itself: whether the facility must either justify the 23-hour lockdown in writing or ease it. His lawyer wants the missed visitation time restored and the monthly limit lifted enough to make a meaningful family visit possible, but the real issue is the one the filing keeps pressing on — whether protection can stand as a reason when it is not backed by a specific, documented explanation.
