Ncis Most Impactful Character Exit: Why Cote de Pablo Left NCIS

NCIS is still living with the exit that changed it most. Cote de Pablo’s departure as Ziva David is widely described as the one that perhaps most affected the series as a whole, because it cut short a character who had become central to the team, to Tony DiNozzo’s long-running flirtation, and to the bond she formed with Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

That is why readers are searching this now. NCIS has been on the air for more than 23 seasons, but Ziva’s departure still marks the point where the show’s shape changed for good. Fans often point to her eight-year run as the show’s Golden Age, and the void left by her supposed offscreen death ran through a considerable stretch of Season 11, when the ensemble struggled to regain its balance.

Ziva was first introduced in Season 3 as the replacement for Sasha Alexander’s Caitlin Todd, and she did more than fill a seat. She became part of the core team, gave the series one of its most durable romantic storylines, and helped produce episodes such as Season 3’s Under Covers and Season 7’s Truth or Consequences. When she was written out, the story did not just lose a character. It lost the anchoring chemistry between Tony and Ziva, which had carried some of the show’s most talked-about beats.

De Pablo later said at a 2016 Q&A at Babson College that she left because she felt the character was not being treated with the respect she deserved. “When I felt or I perceived the character was not being treated with the respect she deserved, all the money in the world couldn't [bring me back],” she said. She added, “They were going to send her back to Israel and make her an unfortunate, miserable woman,” and, “What do I leave all the women [who] have watched and followed the show for so long?” She also said, “And I didn't think it was fair.”

The friction point is hard to ignore. Ziva’s exit alienated many fans and seemed to clash with the values that made NCIS work, yet the franchise later greenlit NCIS: Tony & Ziva in 2024 to follow the pair’s post-NCIS life with their daughter overseas. That move was a belated recognition that the story the show cut off was still the one viewers wanted most, even if the spinoff was ultimately canceled after one season.

So the most impactful exit was also the one NCIS never fully replaced. Ellie Bishop took Ziva’s place, but she was never the same kind of fit, and the show never quite recovered the original rhythm that de Pablo helped define. The unanswered question is not whether Ziva mattered. It is why NCIS chose a supposed death over a cleaner goodbye for a character the audience had not finished loving.
