The University of Victoria was ranked first in Canada for research impact in Maclean's University Rankings 2027, a result that puts UVic at the top of the national comparison on one of its most closely watched measures. It also placed second overall among mid-sized universities, giving the school a split result that still leaves it near the top of the category.
That ranking matters now because it comes from the latest College Rankings release and points directly to how universities are judged on research strength, funding and reach. UVic also ranked second for medical-science grants and second for scholarships and bursaries, two measures tied to how much support its researchers bring in and how students are backed.
The medical-science grants measure is based on the success of full-time faculty members in obtaining research funding from NSERC and CIHR. On that score, UVic’s position suggests a strong record in winning support for research work that feeds into its broader standing. The university said its researchers partner with communities, governments and industry to expand the impact of their work, and it pointed to projects involving oceans, climate solutions, Indigenous resurgence, quantum technologies and aerospace engineering.
UVic also said it published a higher proportion of internationally co-authored research than any other university in Canada, adding another layer to the case for its research profile. That helps explain why the school can lead the country on research impact even while finishing second overall among mid-sized universities: the rankings reward different strengths, and UVic is high on several of them at once.
The remaining question is not whether UVic had a strong year in the rankings. It is which mid-sized university finished ahead of it overall, and whether UVic can turn this mix of first-place and second-place results into an even stronger showing next year.
