Kid Rock says Donald Trump hosted Bill Maher and Stephen A. Smith for dinner at the White House on Thursday night, turning an odd pairing into a fresh public moment for a relationship that keeps circling back on itself. He called the meal “epic” and said the group ended up in rare agreement on one point: socialism and communism have no place in their government.
The dinner matters now because Maher had already been talking about it before it happened. On his Club Random podcast on Monday, he said Trump invited him again out of the blue after their first dinner in March 2025, and that the president was “really nice.” Maher said he texted back, “You know what, you’re the president of the United States. Say whatever the f--- you want,” a line that now reads less like a joke than a shrug from a man who knew the meeting was coming.
Kid Rock laid out the guest list on Friday in an interview on Fox & Friends, saying he was at the White House with Trump, Maher and Stephen A. Smith the night before. He said the conversation covered socialism, communism, Iran, Afghanistan, interpreters, unemployment with Black women and funding for HBCUs, and added that there were “so many points” he could do a whole hour on it. That makes the dinner sound less like a photo opportunity and more like a long, freewheeling political conversation between men who do not usually share a table, much less a public one.
The friction is impossible to miss. Trump had unloaded on Maher in a Truth Social post just last month, after years of insulting him as a “low ratings dummy,” “ratings challenged” and a “Highly Overrated Lightweight.” Even so, Maher still showed up again. The dinner stretches their long-running love-hate relationship into another round, and it suggests Trump is willing to use private contact with public critics even after taking shots at them in public. For Maher, the open question is no longer whether he will meet Trump again. It is why Trump keeps asking.
