Prince Archie School Math Anecdote Shared by Prince Harry in Nottingham

Prince Harry turned a light school story into a sharp snapshot of family life on Thursday in Nottingham, saying Prince Archie asked whether he could go to a school that does not do math. Harry said he told his 7-year-old son, “That doesn't exist,” and then watched the joke land in reverse when Archie’s first class on his first day at his new school was math.

The remark came during Harry and Meghan’s first joint public appearance since their return to Britain, a visit that took them first to the Himmah Hub in Nottingham and then to Epic Partners, where the focus is mentoring and education. Meghan said, “It’s great to be back,” while she was also reunited at the Himmah Hub with women she had worked with on Together: Our Community Cookbook in 2018, a project that grew out of the Hubb Community Kitchen after the Grenfell Tower fire.

Harry’s anecdote did more than draw a laugh. It offered one of the few public glimpses into how the family’s return to the UK is playing out at home, with Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, settling into school life after the move back in August. The children initially enrolled at one school, then switched days after the fall term started in September because of security concerns about the commute, and the names of both schools were withheld for privacy and security reasons.

That privacy concern has not kept the issue out of public view. A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess later condemned two photographers who were seen walking the perimeter of the children’s school and looking into the grounds, calling the behavior “extraordinarily reckless.” The school itself was not identified, but the mix of a child’s casual question, a first-day math lesson and the security worries around the commute made the anecdote feel less like a throwaway line than a sign of the adjustments the family is still making.

Harry made a similar visit to Nottingham in 2017 shortly after the couple’s engagement was announced, but this week’s stop carried a different weight: it was the first time Harry and Meghan appeared together in public in Britain since the return. For Archie, the story ends where most school stories do — with math on day one, whether he asked for it or not.
