NBC Sports set its opening NBA coverage plan on Oct. 14, laying out broadcast assignments for the first two weeks of the 2026-27 NBA season and fixing the network’s return date at Tuesday, Oct. 20. The schedule gives viewers the first look at how NBA Opening Night will unfold across NBC, Peacock and NBCSN.
The first night starts with the Boston Celtics against the Detroit Pistons at 3 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, followed by the Philadelphia 76ers against the New York Knicks at 7 p.m. ET and the Oklahoma City Thunder against the San Antonio Spurs at 9:30 p.m. ET. The Celtics-Pistons game will air live from the TODAY Show Plaza at Rockefeller Center in New York City, a setup that makes the opener feel less like a routine broadcast rollout and more like a network event built around the league’s return.
That return also comes with a deep bench of voices. NBC Sports said its NBA on NBC and Peacock team is coming back from last season with Reggie Miller, Jamal Crawford, Grant Hill, Robbie Hummel, Austin Rivers, Brad Daugherty, Derek Fisher and Doc Rivers as game analysts. Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady and Brian Scalabrine will work as studio analysts, while Maria Taylor and Ahmed Fareed will host. Mike Tirico, Noah Eagle, Terry Gannon, Michael Grady and Jason Benetti will handle play-by-play, and Zora Stephenson, Ashley ShahAhmadi, Jordan Cornette and John Fanta will report courtside.
The one detail that stands out is Doc Rivers. NBC Sports lists him primarily as a game analyst, but his first assignment will not be on the game desk. He is set for his first NBA Showtime studio appearance on Nov. 2, when the Oklahoma City Thunder meet the Cleveland Cavaliers at 7 p.m. ET on Peacock and NBCSN. For a broadcaster whose name usually signals game analysis, the first stop in studio marks an unusual opening to the season.
After the opener, NBC Sports has more early-season matchups lined up for Oct. 26 and Oct. 27, including the Golden State Warriors against the Denver Nuggets, the Detroit Pistons against the New York Knicks, and the Portland Trail Blazers against the Los Angeles Lakers. The release covers only the first two weeks, which means the next confirmed moment is not a later ratings milestone or a fuller season map. It is the season opener itself on Oct. 20, followed by Rivers’ studio debut two weeks later.
