The Obama Presidential Center is now projected to cost about $1 billion, the Obama Foundation said, putting the long-delayed campus at nearly triple its original estimate. Emily Bittner said the foundation expects the total cost of building the Chicago project to reach that level, with the increase still being covered through private contributions.

The number matters now because the project was supposed to open in 2021 and instead opened in June 2026 after years of delay. By the end of 2025, the campus was about 80% complete and had already recorded roughly $909 million in construction-related costs, leaving only a narrow gap between the spending already logged and the final projected total.

That gap helps explain how a project that was once pegged at $300 million to $350 million has climbed so far. The campus is more than a single building: it includes a museum dedicated to Barack Obama's presidency, the Obama Foundation headquarters, a public library branch and an athletic center. It does not house Obama's original presidential records, which makes it different from a traditional presidential library even as it has drawn the same kind of scrutiny over cost and purpose.

Bittner said the higher figure reflects continuing cost reconciliation and additional capital improvements. She said the total includes investments in public art, insurance, scope changes in the Home Court, project management and exhibit installation. That detail matters because it shows the rise was not limited to one obvious overrun; it came from a series of design and delivery choices that added up over time.

The project’s finances have also remained under a cloud because its history includes criticism over public parkland use and claims that subcontractors were stiffed out of millions of dollars. The foundation says the campus is funded with private contributions, but the disclosure lands in a story already shaped by delays, legal fights and construction headaches. A separate look at the project’s opening, including the political attention it drew, is here: Me at the Obama Presidential Center as grand opening draws political stars.

What remains unanswered is not whether the campus can be paid for, but how a project that began with a $300 million to $350 million estimate ended up at about $1 billion. The foundation has put the final figure on the table; the explanation for how it got there is still unfolding in the line items.
