Rockstar Games has pushed Grand Theft Auto 6 back again, with the game now scheduled to launch on November 19 after first slipping from a 2025 target to May 26, 2026. The new date stretches the wait for one of the industry’s biggest releases and gives the studio more time on a project that has already been delayed twice.

The timing matters because this is not just another date change. Rockstar said the engine, tools and team built around the project should help it move faster on future games, even as it takes more time now to polish GTA 6. That contrast sits at the center of the delay: the company is building a pipeline it says will speed later work, while asking players to wait longer for the game it is still finishing.

The scale behind that promise is large. By 2026, Rockstar had 4,711 staff across 12 offices, with 4,020 in development and QA and 690 in publishing. That is a major jump from the 2,441 employees the studio had when Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018, and it helps explain why leadership believes the project is leaving behind a stronger base for the next round of development.

Jennifer Kolbe said she informed Strauss Zelnick about both delays, and she described his reaction as difficult but ultimately understanding. Zelnick, for his part, said he was not worried in the least about the business impact and argued that extra time is sometimes needed to make a title its best. The public message is clear enough: Rockstar would rather miss a date than ship before it is ready.

But the studio is also trying to manage the consequences of pushing a game this large farther into the calendar after years of security problems. Rockstar was hit by a major leak in September 2022, when a network intrusion exposed 90 in-development video clips, and security tightened further when remote work ended in April 2024. In August, a hacker group began circulating footage again and threatened to leak the full build, including the story mode, which is a reminder that the company is still protecting the game even as it promises a faster future.

For now, November 19 is the next confirmed milestone. Whether it holds will matter not just to fans waiting for GTA 6, but to a studio that is betting its delay today will buy it speed tomorrow.
