Lincoln City Vs West Ham: Nuno backs Kyle Walker-Peters after half-time changes

Kyle Walker-Peters was taken off at half-time for the second game running, but Nuno Espirito Santo said the move was about shape rather than any problem with the 29-year-old. West Ham now head into Lincoln City on the back of a 1-1 draw with QPR and another early tactical change that left one player out of the picture before the hour of the match had even arrived.

The timing matters because Nuno addressed it before Wednesday's trip to Lincoln City, when the questions around West Ham were not just about results but about how quickly the side had started both games. Against Millwall, they were 2-0 down at the break. Against QPR, they were 1-0 down at half-time before recovering to draw 1-1, and Walker-Peters was again the player sacrificed.

Nuno said he had spoken to Walker-Peters and that the defender understood the decision. He described the change as a way to alter the shape, adding that it was not easy to take out the same player in different games. In his view, the adjustment was part of a wider effort to get more control from the first whistle, not a judgement on the player himself.

That is the sharp edge of the story. Nuno also said there were no issues with Walker-Peters, yet the same substitution has now happened in successive matches. West Ham have been making changes because the starts have been slow twice in a row, and Walker-Peters has become the immediate casualty of that approach. It is a clear sign that the manager is still searching for the right balance after West Ham were relegated to the Championship.

The wider picture is that the squad has already been turned over. Mateus Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville and Niclas Fullkrug left after the relegation from the Premier League, while Edson Alvarez has not yet featured in a league game this season and has only contributed against Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup first round. West Ham also paid a club-record fee to sign Arne Engels from Celtic, underlining how much has changed even before the season has settled.

For Walker-Peters, the next step is simple enough to state and hard enough to predict: he will either stay in the frame when West Ham go to Lincoln City, or he will again discover that a slow start can cost him the first half before it costs the team the game.
