FC Cincinnati came out of the international break and headed straight into a road test against Atlanta United FC, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Apple TV. For Pat Noonan, the pause was less about rest than repair after a 3-1 loss on the road to Montreal.
Noonan said the break gave the team a chance to train throughout the week and play an intersquad game to stay sharp. He said it also helped the club get some good fitness and gave some of the newer pieces — Tyrell, Julián and David — a chance to get involved, while the coaches looked over what had gone wrong in Montreal.
That match had left a mark. Noonan called the performance confusing, and the thing that stood out most to him was the energy his side brought despite the result. The response in the days after was straightforward: work, repeat and try to make the next game cleaner. That is why the trip to Atlanta mattered so much. It was the first chance to see whether the pause could turn into points, and the start of an October run that was described as extremely busy.
The biggest fix stayed the same. FC Cincinnati has been able to create chances and score goals, but Noonan said the defense remains the problem because the team keeps conceding. He said the week was spent on intensity, duels and structure, with extra attention on the defensive side of the ball. Still, he was blunt about the limit of practice alone: the group can talk about the issue all it wants, but it has to show up in a better way on gameday.
That makes Atlanta more than a reset; it is a test of whether the break actually changed anything. Noonan said the team came back with a simple target, to earn points and keep pushing through this stretch, and the road in October gives little room for a slow start.
