Elche and Celta came back from the break with something they had both been waiting for: their first LaLiga wins of the season. That makes this meeting at the Martínez Valero feel less like a restart and more like a test of whether those results can actually hold up.
Elche earned theirs away at Espanyol, even after going down to one fewer player in the 6th minute. Celta arrived on the same wave of relief after a 5-0 win over Racing de Santander at Balaídos, a result that gave their week a very different shape from the one they had before the pause. For both, the search on a day like this is simple: was that the start of a run, or just a clean break from a rough opening stretch?
For Elche, there is more than momentum at stake. Martín Anselmi had to reshape the defense after Fede Redondo was sent off at the RCDE Stadium, and the club now has Sangaré back after he recovered during the break from the injury he picked up in the last match. Josan is also available again after being detained on Tuesday and later released without charges, giving Elche another option at a time when they are still trying to turn home frustration into points.
That home frustration is hard to ignore. Elche had lost their first three matches at the Martínez Valero, and in their two previous home defeats they fought back from 0-2 down against Real Sociedad and Real Madrid before still being caught late. The response was there. The finish was not. That is the part they have to correct if the first home win of the season is going to arrive now rather than later.
Celta, meanwhile, arrive with a different kind of burden. They have not lost away in LaLiga, which gives them a base to work from, and Iago Aspas is back in the squad after receiving medical clearance. Even so, Miguel Román, Starfelt and Jones El-Abdellaoui are missing through injury, and the club is already thinking about Thursday, when Juventus visit in the Europa League. That is the tension in the schedule: a league match that matters now, and another one looming almost immediately after it.
The numbers around both teams still point in opposite directions and make the contest hard to read. Fer Niño and Durán both scored doubles in the previous round, and Fer Niño now has five league goals after adding three others to that double. But the cleaner story is the one both clubs brought into this match: two first wins, one after the other, and the chance to show that the break did not cool either side down.
If Elche can finally protect a lead at home, the Martinez Valero will feel different. If Celta can keep their away run alive while juggling Thursday’s visit from Juventus, then their first win before the pause will look less like a spike and more like a turning point.
