Louisville comes into Florida State Vs Louisville trying to arrest a skid that has pulled the Cardinals back from the ACC contender conversation. John Powell of SBNation's Card Chronicle said transfer quarterback Lincoln Kienholz has been “great” since arriving from Ohio State, even as Louisville has dropped back-to-back games to Wake Forest and NC State.
The timing matters because Kienholz is not just another quarterback in a midseason reshuffle. He had not started a game since high school before arriving at Louisville this offseason, and Powell said the move has given the Cardinals a passer who can make most throws, run out of the pocket and protect the ball mostly. That kind of stability is why Louisville could look dangerous when it opened with a walkoff field goal push against Ole Miss and then took care of SMU in Week three.
Powell also put the season in blunt perspective. Louisville is 19-3 under Jeff Brohm as an unranked team, but 11-11 when ranked, a split that captures why the Cardinals have felt so volatile. He described the offense as having the kind of skill talent built around Isaac Brown, Keyjuan Brown, Tre Richardson and Lawayne McCoy that can carry a team for stretches, but that has not solved everything when the game tightens late.
What has undone Louisville lately is simpler than the flash of its offense: the finishing. Powell said fans would have expected poor quarterback play if the team had started 2-3, but that has not been the main complaint. The bigger problem has been the defense, which has been described as atrocious and unacceptable, and that is where the Cardinals have bled value in the fourth quarter of close games.
So the question entering Florida State is not whether Kienholz can survive the moment. It is whether Louisville can turn a good transfer story into a complete performance before the season’s early promise slips further away.
