A 6-year-old student died Wednesday after a large video display board fell at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay, turning an ordinary school day into a fatal emergency in a matter of moments. School staff called 911 and began lifesaving measures right away, but the child later died after being taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center.

The death is the reason Riviera Elementary School is drawing attention now. Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Mark Rendell met with the student’s family and said he struggled to find words for the grief shared by the district, while Brevard Public Schools said additional support and counseling services will be available to students and staff in the days ahead.

What remains unanswered is how a mounted classroom display board came down on a child in the first place. Palm Bay police are investigating how the incident happened, and that question now sits at the center of the case: whether the board failed, was improperly secured or came loose in some other way has not been explained.

Janet Murnaghan said the district was devastated by the loss and extended condolences to the student’s family, classmates and others in the school community. Nicholas Szczepanski also offered thoughts and prayers for everyone involved in the tragic accident, while David Fansin called the death of such a young child “an absolute shame.”

Outside the school, a memorial has started to take shape with stuffed animals, toys and flowers. That small gathering of grief is the clearest sign of what Wednesday has become for Riviera Elementary in Palm Bay: a schoolwide loss, a police investigation and a family left waiting for answers that no one has yet provided.
