Apple TV has ordered a second season of Imperfect Women, and this time the story belongs to Eleanor. Kerry Washington will lead the new chapter after the streamer decided to move the series forward beyond its first run, which ended with Eleanor headed in a different direction from the one that first drew viewers in.
That is why the search for Apple Tv+ Imperfect Women Season 2 is starting now: the show is no longer just a one-and-done adaptation. Washington said she is excited to step back into Eleanor’s shoes, and the new season will again put her character at the center of the action while Apple TV keeps the franchise moving.
The first season of Imperfect Women came from Araminta Hall’s novel and followed Eleanor and Mary as they tried to solve the murder of Nancy. Mary was played by Elisabeth Moss, while Nancy appeared in flashbacks as Kate Mara. Kerry Washington and Elisabeth Moss executive produced that original installment, and both will do so again as the story expands into season 2.
The new season breaks from the book altogether. There is no second Imperfect Women book, so the next chapter will be built as an original story from Annie Weisman and Justin Hillian, who will also serve as co-showrunners. That gives the series room to keep going without being tied to the structure of the novel that launched it, and it also shifts the focus away from the full original trio.
Apple TV is also changing the landscape. Season 2 will leave Los Angeles behind and take Eleanor back to her hometown roots in the affluent black enclave of Martha's Vineyard, where secrets and scandals are set to threaten her understanding of her past. There are no plans for Mary or Robert to be part of the second installment, and Robert, Nancy’s widower played by Joel Kinnaman, is one of the clearest signs that this is not a simple repeat of the first season.
Still, the series is not starting over from scratch. The finale already pointed toward this move by sending Eleanor into a flash-forward that showed her leaving a toxic set of relationships and living on a yacht with a new love interest. Leslie Odom Jr. is expected to return as her brother, and Sheryl Lee Ralph is expected to return as her mother, keeping some of Eleanor’s family ties in place even as the story changes shape.
Matt Cherniss said Apple TV jumped at the chance to expand Imperfect Women through Eleanor, and that is the key to what comes next. The streamer has not announced a full cast lineup or a release date yet, but the decision to continue the series as an original follow-up makes one thing plain: Eleanor is no longer just part of the ensemble, she is the center of the franchise now.
