Valve rolled out Deadlock's City Never Sleeps update on Tuesday, adding six new heroes, a New York City map and new creeps now officially called Haunts. The update also sent Deadlock's player count to an all-time high, with concurrent players surging past 228,000 shortly after it went live.

That is why the Valve Deadlock Development Update is drawing so much attention now: it is not just a content drop, but a record-setting one. SteamDB described the post-update surge as the game’s highest concurrent player total yet, a milestone that landed alongside a broad expansion of the game’s cast and map pool.

The six new heroes are Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba and Violet. Players can vote in-game on which one rolls out first, which leaves one immediate question unresolved even after the update’s biggest changes are already live.

For Baba, the update has a sharper edge. She is the little old lady who hangs out with pigeons, one of the new faces joining a game that Valve still describes as unfinished in important ways. After January's Old Gods New Blood update, Valve said there was still a good amount of work to do on the core game before it moved into more polish-focused phases, and the team said it has been working in parallel on progression, hero and hideout customizations, large item redesigns and additions, and alternate game modes.

That mix tells the story of where Deadlock sits right now: Valve is pushing out major new content while still treating the game as a work in progress. Some of the features now under development are meant to be adjusted heavily from feedback, and some are still speculative enough that Valve is not promising they will all survive playtesting. The City Never Sleeps update makes Deadlock feel bigger and more public than before, but the next step still depends on which hero players choose to bring in first and how much of the broader plan makes it through testing.
