American Horror Story is back on Thursday, Sept. 24, and FX is opening the new season with a three-episode premiere at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. The first stretch of American Horror Story: 13 will also stream on Hulu, giving viewers an immediate way to catch up after the launch night.
That date matters because the franchise is not easing back in. Three more episodes are scheduled for the following week, then the season moves to two episodes a week before the finale on Oct. 29. For anyone searching now, the question is no longer whether the season is coming back, but how much of it will be waiting on the first night.
The draw is the cast. Jessica Lange returns as Constance Langdon, Sister Jude, Fiona Goode and Elsa Mars, a rare swing across Murder House, Asylum, Coven and Freak Show that gives the season one of its most recognizable anchors. Sarah Paulson is back in several roles, including Cordelia Goode, while Evan Peters revisits Tate Langdon and James Patrick March.
FX has also confirmed Angela Bassett as Marie Laveau, Kathy Bates as Madame Delphine LaLaurie, Emma Roberts as Madison Montgomery and Gabourey Sidibe as Queenie, with Billie Lourd returning as Winter Anderson and Mallory, Leslie Grossman back as Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt and Joey Pollari playing Ben DeSoto. The platform has listed all 12 previous installments on Hulu, so viewers who want the callbacks have a full archive to move through before the new run begins.
What FX has not said is almost as important as what it has. The network has revealed little about how these characters’ stories will intersect, even as it pulls together figures from across the anthology. The official trailer points to a threat involving the witches, which narrows the field without explaining who drives the season or why so many different paths are being brought into the same frame.
That leaves American Horror Story: 13 with a simple but sturdy setup: a fast start, a familiar cast and a schedule that keeps moving. The first answer arrives Sept. 24. The bigger one is whether the season can turn a cast full of returning names into a single story that feels meant to be shared.
