Tim Tebow said Saturday morning that George Macintyre can help Tennessee beat anybody in the country, but only if the young quarterback becomes more consistent before the Vols face Kentucky in Knoxville on Saturday night. Tebow tied Tennessee’s ceiling directly to Macintyre’s play, saying the quarterback has the talent and ability to get it done if he takes a step forward.
The case for Tennessee is obvious enough from the rest of the roster. Tebow said the Volunteers have one of the best defenses in the country, perhaps the best defense, and called their running game elite behind DeSean Bishop. That is why the quarterback spot carries so much weight now: Tennessee does not need Macintyre to carry the whole offense, but it does need him to avoid losing the hidden yards and hidden downs that decide close games.
Tebow pointed to the South Carolina game as the clearest example of what still has to change. He said there were too many missed opportunities, especially on third down, and described throws that were behind receivers because Macintyre was not confident enough to let it rip. In Tebow’s view, the extra hitch in the motion gives defenders time to tip the ball, and on third down that is as good as another turnover. He said Macintyre’s third-down QBR was 8.2, by far the lowest in the SEC.
That number matters because it sits inside a broader pattern that still cuts both ways. Macintyre was better against Alabama than against Auburn, better against South Carolina than against Alabama, and still young enough to be viewed as a work in progress. The growth is there, but so is the gap between promise and production. Tebow’s point was not that Tennessee is short on talent. It is that the Vols are close enough to the College Football Playoff conversation that the quarterback’s next jump may decide whether they stay there.
Tennessee fans have already been frustrated by the team’s place in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, and the Kentucky game could sharpen that mood further. If Macintyre makes the kind of leap Tebow described and Tennessee can put together a 4-0 month, the Vols can turn a bubble season into something far more dangerous. If he does not, the defense and the run game may be strong enough to keep Tennessee competitive, but not necessarily enough to carry it where it wants to go.
