Dart was hurt on a third-and-8 incompletion to Theo Johnson from the Rams’ 41-yard line, when he was sandwiched between Byron Young and Josaiah Stewer. He walked slowly off the field under his own power, but the left knee appeared to bend in an awkward manner, a detail that made the exit feel far more serious than the way it looked at first glance. He was later listed questionable to return.
The immediate concern is less about the optics of the walk off and more about what the knee can tolerate if he is asked to go back in. A quarterback can leave under his own power and still be unable to play effectively, and in Dart’s case the injury came on a hit from the pocket rather than on a scramble. That matters because it interrupts the one thing the Giants cannot afford in the middle of a game: a sudden breakdown at quarterback.
Dart has made protecting himself from big hits and concussions a constant part of his profile, which adds another layer to a sequence that already forced the Giants to shift plans on the fly. He later limped slowly to the locker room after being checked in the medical tent, reinforcing the uncertainty around whether he could return at all. For now, the only firm answer is that Winston is running the offense while the Giants wait on the quarterback who started the night.
The broader backdrop is not comforting. Several starting quarterbacks have already suffered injuries this season, including Sam Darnold, Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams, and Dart’s exit adds to a growing list that teams are being forced to manage in real time. If he does not come back, the Giants will have to finish the game without the quarterback who opened it; if he does, it will almost certainly be with caution, because a knee injury that changes a player’s gait rarely disappears between drives.
