The number that makes the prediction land is the one behind it: after one week of action, only one AFC team was projected to win more than 10 games, and that team was Cincinnati. The Bengals also were projected as the conference’s top overall seed, even though they missed the playoffs last season. Joe Burrow is the face of that shift, after Cincinnati finally invested money in the offensive line to protect him and the defense seemed to get better around him.

For now, the projection does not settle the conference. It only says that after one week, the AFC looked like a place where Cincinnati had the cleanest path to the top, and where the next few Sundays will decide whether that opening read was a tease or the first real sign of how the season will finish.
