Iwo Baraniewski will open the main card at UFC 331 in Los Angeles against No. 14-ranked Alonzo Menifield, giving the Polish fighter his first shot at a top-15 opponent on a numbered-event main card. It is the next step in a run that has turned every UFC appearance into a quick finish.

Baraniewski has won all three of his UFC fights by first-round knockout since his debut last December, and those three wins have taken a combined three minutes, 22 seconds. He arrived with a 20-second win over Mahamed Aly on Dana White’s Contender Series, then stopped Ibo Aslan in 99 seconds, Austen Lane in 28 seconds and Junior Tafa in 85 seconds with a leg kick and follow-up strikes. That kind of speed explains why the UFC matched him with Menifield: after three straight first-round knockouts, he has already shown enough firepower to be trusted with a veteran who has spent 18 fights in the Octagon and just finished Zhang Mingyang in the first round at UFC Macau.

Baraniewski said the main-card slot is a major push for him, especially with the arena expected to be full and the chance to perform in front of thousands of people. He also said he hoped his next opponent would come from the top 15, and that wish was granted with Menifield. The matchup gives him a ranking opportunity, but it also asks a different question than the first three UFC bouts: can a judoka-turned-mixed martial artist still dictate the pace when the fight lasts long enough for technique to matter?

That is where the odd shape of this matchup comes in. Baraniewski says he wants a more technical fight and wants to show he can go into the third round, yet his UFC record is built on first-round destruction. Menifield, meanwhile, is not walking in as a name to inflate the highlight reel; he is a veteran striker who has already just won by first-round finish himself. If Baraniewski can make the fight look controlled rather than rushed, he leaves UFC 331 with more than another win. He leaves with a case that his rise is not just fast, but ready for the level that comes next.
