A UMass Dartmouth football player was killed and another was hurt in a stabbing early Sept. 19 in Providence, after an altercation that began at Mezzo Lounge and ended in the parking lot of the Wendy’s on Charles Street.
Police identified the dead player as Marvins Antoine, an 18-year-old freshman from Boston who previously attended B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts. Kensley Macean, a 19-year-old first-year student, suffered non-life-threatening injuries to the head and neck and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. Both men were there with other members of the UMass Dartmouth football team, turning what should have been an ordinary night out into a fatal confrontation in a busy part of Providence.
What happened after the argument matters as much as where it started. Two men were stabbed around 12:30 a.m., and Antoine later died at Rhode Island Hospital while Macean survived with injuries that were serious enough to require hospital care. That sequence points to a sudden escalation, with the violence moving from the lounge to the parking lot in a matter of minutes.
In a statement, Mark A. Fuller said the school had no reason to believe there was any ongoing threat to the UMass Dartmouth community, even as the investigation remained active and a suspect was being held in the custody of the UMass Dartmouth Police Department. Fuller also extended condolences to Antoine’s family, classmates and teammates, and said he hoped Macean would recover and be able to resume his education soon.
The school also moved quickly to put support in place, announcing special hours for the Counseling Center and directing students to an after-hours Support Help Line at 508-910-4357. It also listed the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life at 508-999-8872 and encouraged students to contact staff within the Frederick Douglass Unity House and the Center for Women, Gender & Sexuality for help. The response reflects the scale of the loss: Antoine was not only a student-athlete, but also a freshman whose death will be felt across the team and campus.
There is still one central question hanging over the case — what began at Mezzo Lounge and turned a night out into a deadly stabbing. Police have not released further details, and until they do, the reason for the attack remains the missing piece in a case that has already left one family mourning and another student recovering from injury.
