Joshua Van will defend the UFC flyweight title against Alexandre Pantoja this Saturday at UFC 331 in Los Angeles, giving the pair a rematch after their first meeting ended in a flash. The first fight lasted less than 30 seconds and left Pantoja with a fluke arm injury that turned the bout into a 26-second title change.
That quick ending is why Pantoja’s name is back at the center of the division now. Van is coming in with seven straight wins, including the title victory over Pantoja and a defense against Tatsuro Taira, while Pantoja is trying to erase the night he lost his belt after an eight-fight heater.
Those numbers are the reason this rematch has real weight. Van has already shown he can win at championship speed, and one preview of the bout described his performance against Taira as a thrilling beatdown. At the same time, Pantoja still has the kind of résumé that keeps him in the conversation, with one analyst calling him the second-best flyweight in UFC history behind Demetrious Johnson.
Not everyone sees the rematch as a repeat of the first result. Lyle Fitzsimmons expects Pantoja to win by unanimous decision, while Adam Kramer picked Pantoja to take it by submission in Round 3. Kramer also noted that the first meeting gave fans only 26 seconds of action, with an elbow injury ending Pantoja’s night and handing Van the belt under deeply unfortunate circumstances. Joshua Van plans to finish Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 331 and move fast.
The cleanest read is that UFC 331 will tell a much more complete story than the first fight did. Van and Pantoja are meeting again because the division never got a full title bout the first time, and Saturday gives both men a chance to settle whether that last result was a snapshot or the beginning of a new order at flyweight.
