Amen Thompson agreed to a five-year, $208 million extension with the Houston Rockets, a deal that keeps him under team control through 2032 and gives the franchise another long-term piece to build around.
The contract also includes a 10% trade bonus clause, which would increase Thompson’s payout if he is dealt after the extension takes effect. It is the latest major commitment for a Rockets core that has already seen Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason extended, as Houston continues to lock in its young talent before it reaches a more expensive stage.
The move lands now because Thompson, 23, just posted career highs across the board last season. He averaged 18.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals, led the NBA in minutes played and finished among the league leaders in steals and loose balls recovered. He also spent much of the season at point guard because of Fred VanVleet’s absence, a stretch that showed how much responsibility Houston was willing to place on him.
That is what makes the agreement more than a simple payday. Thompson, the No. 4 pick in the 2023 Draft, has grown into a player the Rockets can use almost anywhere on the floor, from the perimeter to the paint. He was one of only nine players in the NBA to average at least 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists last season, a narrow group that hints at how unusual his profile has become.
There is still one detail missing: the exact salary breakdown by year. The total is clear, but the annual structure is not, and the trade bonus clause could matter if Houston ever changes direction. If the deal is completed as reported, Thompson will be one of the pillars of a roster that also includes Kevin Durant, and he becomes the second player from the 2023 class to sign a rookie extension after Victor Wembanyama.
For the Rockets, the message is already unmistakable. They are not waiting to see whether their young core can become the future; they are paying to keep it together now.
