Manchester City go into their meeting with Liverpool top of the table after back-to-back wins over Aston Villa and Birmingham City, but Gareth Taylor is already managing the kind of fitness questions that can shape a title run. Liverpool are third, which gives this Women’s Super League fixture the feel of a marker game as much as a points chase.

The timing matters because City have opened the season strongly and Khadija Shaw has scored in both of their opening two league games, while Mary Fowler is also in the frame for a small piece of club history. If either Shaw or Fowler scores again, one of them would become the first player to score in all of City’s first three Women’s Super League games in a season, a tidy measure of how sharp City have looked at the start.

Liverpool arrive with a story of their own. Marie Hobinger came back from an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the weekend and came off the bench in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham, a reminder that the visitors are also working players back into rhythm even as they sit near the top end of the table. Last week’s draw with Spurs kept them in touch, but it also means they travel to a ground where City have the form and the table position to frame the contest on their terms.

For Taylor, though, the challenge runs beyond Liverpool. He said Lucy Parry and Mari Ward are getting closer to rejoining the team, but both are still too soon to be involved, and Mao Itamura is back on-pitch yet also not ready. He also pointed to a couple of little niggles from last weekend’s highly physical game, adding that the coming stretch will be difficult because City play again on Wednesday, again on Sunday, and then repeat that pattern the following week.

That load is made heavier by the player-availability issues around Anna Josendal, which leaves City trying to keep momentum while protecting bodies. They can still go into this match with the better form and the clearer league position, but the next few days will show whether that advantage is built to last or whether the schedule starts to bite before the table can settle.
