Izzy Fairthorne says cast was shocked by Nelson: The Challenge disqualifications

Izzy Fairthorne said the cast of The Challenge Season 42 was stunned when Josh Goldstein, Leo Dionicio and Nelson Thomas were removed from the show after an alleged racial incident that never made it into the episode. On Wednesday, Fairthorne said viewers only saw host T.J. Lavin tell the cast the three men had broken the code of conduct and were off the show, while the moment that set off the exits was kept out of the edit.

That is why the disqualifications are drawing fresh attention now. Fairthorne said the cast did not know much about what had happened, and that when Lavin walked in and announced they were going, everyone was left asking what changed. The scene aired without the backstory, leaving the audience with a triple removal and almost no explanation for it.

Fairthorne said two of the three men later filled her in on what went down between them, but she stopped short of speaking for either side. She said the situation was sensitive and that it should come from the people involved, not from her. What she did make clear was that she was shocked the alleged incident did not air, even though she wanted the drama to make the broadcast.

Reports tied to the unseen confrontation say the sequence began during a game involving Leo Dionicio and Nelson Thomas, when a racial slur was allegedly used and repeated. They also say Thomas later confronted Goldstein, walked away, returned to the kitchen and broke multiple items, which led to him being taken to a hotel before he was also disqualified. Lavin’s on-air explanation to the cast was blunt: all three had broken the code of conduct.

That gap between what happened and what viewers saw is the part that now hangs over the season. Fairthorne said she and Thomas made up after the show, and she added that she was told about Cory Wharton’s situation at home at the time, only to later think that story may not have been the full truth. For now, the biggest unanswered point is not who left The Challenge Season 42, but why the show chose to air the exits without the incident that triggered them.
