Public health investigators have linked the death of Moises Ponce Mendoza, a 17-year-old from Burlington, to possible exposure at a water feature at El Futuro, and the feature remains closed while the center works with public health officials. The case has turned a rare infection into a very immediate question for Durham families using public water features: how much protection is in place when warm water is part of the attraction.
Investigators found non-viable Naegleria fowleri DNA at the site after Ponce Mendoza died on Aug. 31. State public health veterinarian Dr. Carl Williams said that any time water with the amoeba gets up into a person’s nose, that can count as exposure, and even splashing can create the possibility. Health officials say infections tied to the amoeba are extremely rare, but the warning is sharpened by the fact that Naegleria fowleri occurs naturally in soil and warm freshwater, including ponds, lakes and rivers, and can also turn up in poorly maintained outdoor water features.
That broader risk is why the El Futuro finding matters beyond one case. The Durham County Health Department said the water feature there had not completed the required application, evaluation and permitting process, while permitted pools and water features in Durham County are inspected regularly as required by the state. The department has not said the feature will reopen, and for now the site is staying shut while health officials continue their work.
The closing point is not the search for a headline number or a bigger scare. It is that a rare organism became relevant because a local water feature was found to have trace DNA, and officials still have to explain how the exposure happened even though the DNA was described as non-viable. Health officials have told people exposed to warm freshwater to use nose clips, and facilities across Durham are being measured against that standard as they reopen or stay open through the summer heat.
At the Museum of Life and Science, Director of Marketing & Communications Ro Rode said the museum tests its water features daily when temperatures rise above 80 degrees, and twice daily to make sure chlorine and other levels are where they want them to be. That kind of routine has become part of the answer Durham families are now looking for: not whether brain-eating amoeba infections are common, but whether the water they step into is being watched closely enough to keep a rare danger from becoming a real one.
