Ryan Phillippe is joining Season 2 of 9-1-1: Nashville as Detective Rogue, a former homicide detective for the NYPD, adding a New York-linked face to the show just as the next run is set to widen its crossover reach.
That matters now because 9-1-1: Nashville returns on Thursday, October 15 at 9/8c, and the season is being positioned as a bridge between Season 10 of 9-1-1 and Season 23 of Grey's Anatomy. Rashad Raisani has said Season 2 will include multiple crossovers, with the first coming in the second episode through a FaceTime call involving Buck from 9-1-1.
Phillippe's Detective Rogue gives the new season a character built for that larger web. A former homicide detective from New York, he fits neatly into a story that Raisani says will lean hard on connections to New York across the three shows. The setup also leaves room for the kind of overlap the franchise has already tested before, when Buck and Eddie crossed into 9-1-1: Nashville for the annual firefighter games last season.
Raisani has gone further than that. He said the show's new Big Bad will terrorize Nashville with crimes inspired by Biblical plagues, a choice that suggests the season will balance casework with a bigger, more serial threat. He also said a crossover with 9-1-1: Lone Star characters is in the works in a big way, and that he thinks it could land around Episode 8 or 9.
That is the part still hanging in the air. The show is already introducing one New York-linked character in Detective Rogue, but the 9-1-1: Lone Star crossover is not yet on screen, and Raisani's comments leave the cast list open. He has said Roxie is also from New York, that there was a certain paramedic from New York she might know, and that some of these people bumped into each other, which points to a shared past without spelling it out.
Raisani, who also served as showrunner of 9-1-1: Lone Star for five seasons on Fox, is clearly trying to make New York the thread that binds the shows together rather than treating each crossover as a one-off stunt. For viewers, that means the next reveal is not just how Detective Rogue fits into 9-1-1: Nashville, but which familiar faces from 9-1-1: Lone Star will eventually follow him through the door.
