Florida State fired Michael Alford on Monday, Sept. 14, ending his run as vice president and director of athletics after about four years and turning the job over to Bruce Warwick on an interim basis. Warwick, who had been serving as senior associate athletics director, was placed in charge immediately.
The move lands at a moment when Florida State is still trying to steady its football side and its finances at the same time. Alford had been hired on Dec. 9, 2021, after previously leading Central Michigan, and he took over as athletics leader in January 2022. He later received a 2024 extension worth $6.7 million, with a base salary of $1.45 million annually through 2028, a deal that looked like long-term security until Monday’s dismissal changed the picture in an instant.
The scale of what was built under Alford makes the firing harder to explain in simple terms. Florida State said his tenure included more than $500 million in facility projects and upgrades, including work at Doak Campbell Stadium and the opening of the Dunlap Football Center. Athletics revenue also rose 31.5% since 2022, and his time in charge included several marquee coaching hires. By the numbers, this was not a department standing still.
And yet the pressure never went away. The football program under Mike Norvell has struggled since 2024, while the department faced scrutiny over NIL and roster funding, especially in football, along with its massive debt. Sportico reported in February 2026 that Florida State carried $437 million in athletic-related debt for the 2025 fiscal year. That mix of growth on one hand and worry on the other is what makes this change feel less like routine turnover and more like a reset.
Florida State said the leadership change reflects its commitment to maintaining the highest standards for student-athletes and staff. Peter Collins said changes were necessary and that more structural changes were still needed, framing the move as the start of a broader restructuring effort. What comes next is clearer in the short term than the long term: Warwick runs the department now, while Florida State decides whether the next permanent athletics leader is being chosen to finish what Alford built or to fix what those achievements never solved.
