Wake Forest Basketball heads to Nashville tonight as Vanderbilt opens the season in a Top-100 matchup that carries more lopsided expectations than the rankings alone might suggest. The Commodores are being backed to win by 20 or more, a number that has made this game stand out before either team has tipped off.
Tyler Tanner is one reason the market leans that way. A season ago, he was a first-team All-SEC and All-Defensive selection, averaged nearly 20 PPG and 5.1 APG, and shot 37% from deep. He returns to a Vanderbilt group that also has Bangot Dak, who posted 11.5 PPG, 6.5 RPG and a 6.4% block rate last season. Both teams enter with high hopes, but Vanderbilt is carrying the sharper edge of recent production into a game set for tonight.
The setup matters because this is not a mismatch between strangers. Wake Forest and Vanderbilt both ranked among the top 115 in possessions per game a year ago, so pace should be part of the picture from the start. Vanderbilt also comes in after facing Virginia, Miami (FL) and UAB in preparation for the 2026-27 season, while Wake Forest played Georgetown and South Carolina. That tougher exhibition path is part of the case for Vanderbilt, which is why the Commodores are drawing confidence even with the two teams not far apart in Bart Torvik's rankings.
That is where the friction sits. Wake Forest did not return a single starter from last season and brought back only four players from the previous roster, so the early read on the Demon Deacons depends as much on fit as on talent. Vanderbilt, by contrast, can lean on Tanner's creation and Dak's interior impact, and its 11-1 ATS mark over its last 12 games after a straight-up win of more than 20 points adds another layer to the expectation of a comfortable night. The game may still be decided on the floor, but the market has already made its view clear.
What remains to be seen is whether Wake Forest can make that number look too rich, or whether Vanderbilt turns a strong preseason and a familiar pace into the kind of opening statement that matches the spread.
