Deuce Knight finally got on the field for Ole Miss on Sept. 12, entering for the first time as a Rebel when the game with Charlotte had already turned into a rout. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound sophomore from Lucedale came in late while Ole Miss was leading 34-9 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
That moment matters because Knight is not just any reserve. He arrived from Auburn as a former five-star recruit in the 2025 class, a player ranked No. 28 nationally, No. 5 among quarterbacks and No. 1 in Mississippi by the 247Sports Composite. He had already shown why people noticed him in the first place. At Auburn last season, while still a freshman, he played in two games and made one start, then led the Tigers to a 62-17 win against Mercer with 239 passing yards, two touchdowns, 162 rushing yards and four more scores.
Knight's path to Ole Miss ran through a difficult stretch at Auburn. He entered the transfer portal after Auburn fired Huge Freeze midseason, and he was never the starter there, with Jackson Arnold taking that job before transferring to UNLV. At Ole Miss, Knight is the backup to Trinidad Chambliss, which means his first appearance in the uniform was always going to depend on the game state and the depth chart ahead of him.
That is the part that makes Sept. 12 more than a ceremonial first snap. Knight was the sort of recruit programs build around, yet his role now is to wait behind another quarterback and take his first meaningful steps only when the score allows it. Ole Miss had room to give him that chance because Charlotte was already well behind, but the move also showed how little is settled beyond the backup spot. Whether Knight gets a larger role after this remains the real question for Ole Miss.
