Clemson’s quarterback competition is carrying into Saturday night’s home opener against Georgia Southern, with Chris Vizzina expected to start and Tait Reynolds expected to see the field.
That is why the search for answers around Tait Reynolds is still alive now. Clemson is not treating the job as settled, and the next live test comes in front of the home crowd, where every snap will be part of the evaluation.
Vizzina will take the first snap, and he is doing it again after getting the nod last week in Baton Rouge against LSU. In his second career start, he went 10-of-16 for 83 yards. Before the season, he had completed 64 of 105 passes for 596 yards with four touchdowns and one interception, a line that showed enough to keep him in the mix but not enough to end the competition.
Reynolds brings a different kind of pressure to the decision. He made his Clemson debut against LSU and logged 16 snaps, finishing 4-of-6 for 22 yards. That was enough to get him into the conversation, not enough to win it outright, and enough to make sure the staff has a second option ready if the offense stalls.
That is the friction point in this game. Vizzina is expected to begin with the first-team center, Harris Sewell, but if Clemson’s offense struggles again, his leash could be short. The job began as a spring competition and has not been resolved by summer, by the opener’s buildup or by the LSU game. Saturday night gives Clemson another chance to sort it out in real time.
What comes next may be decided snap by snap. If Vizzina opens cleanly and the offense moves, he can widen the gap. If not, Reynolds could get more than a cameo, and Clemson may leave its home opener with the same question it brought into it.
