Craig Berg was found alive on Isle Royale on Saturday, ending the search for the 70-year-old downstate man who had been missing since Sept. 5. Backpackers found him, and his son later said he was awake, able to speak and asking for food and water.

The discovery mattered because Berg’s family had reported that he did not return home as planned, and the search stretched across days before anyone spotted him. By Saturday evening, Evan Berg said his father was in rough shape but okay, a description that matched relief with the reality that the ordeal had taken a physical toll.

Evan Berg said the family was grateful and relieved. He thanked the National Park Service, DNR, MSP and everyday people who helped during the search, after what had become a closely watched effort to bring his father home from Isle Royale.

The National Park Service also thanked the employees and partners who helped during the search. More information will be added as it becomes available, but the essential fact is now clear: the missing man was found alive, and the long wait that began on Sept. 5 ended with a rescue that left his family celebrating and catching its breath at the same time.
