TNT’s eight-episode limited series High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam is drawing attention before it even airs, after a review found that the drama built around John Nixon’s interrogation of Saddam Hussein is packed with fictionalization, contrivance and one-dimensional side characters. The show is scheduled to reach viewers at 9 p.m. Sunday, September 13.
The interest is easy to understand. Joel Kinnaman plays Nixon, the CIA analyst who first questioned Saddam after his capture in December 2003, and the series is built from Nixon’s book Debriefing the President: The Interrogation of Saddam Hussein. For viewers looking for the real history behind the title, that alone makes the production stand out: it is not an invented spy tale, but a dramatization attached to a documented moment in Iraq’s post-invasion aftermath.
The show begins with the March 2003 invasion of Iraq and moves toward the December 2003 capture that put Saddam in American custody. In that sense, it reaches back to the period that set Nixon’s work in motion. The review also points to a striking detail from the CIA’s own history: a decade after Saddam was removed from Kuwait, the agency had exactly one person studying him. That helps explain why Nixon’s role was so singular, and why the story still carries weight more than 20 years later.
But the series does not appear to stay inside the facts for long. The same review calls it a mix of solid material buried under fictionalized nonsense, and says the supporting characters are largely reduced to sketches. It also notes that George Piro, whose interrogation of Saddam received the most publicity, sits beside Nixon in the wider history but not at the center of the show’s account. That gap between what is documented and what is dramatized is the real test of the series, because the closer it gets to invention, the more it risks turning a rare piece of intelligence history into generic television.
Still, the project arrives as TNT returns to original programming with High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam and The Librarians: The Next Chapter. Leslie Greif developed the series, with Daniel Stiepleman and Jonathan Wakeham credited as creators, and Waleed Zuaiter and Tom Berenger also in the cast. The next question is not whether Nixon’s story is dramatic enough. It is whether the version on screen will let the facts do their work, or bury them under the kind of embellishment that makes a true story feel less true.
