Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo at a big event in early September, and the foldable was the product that drew the most attention. It is Apple’s first foldable device, priced from $1,999, with two displays and a design that puts it in direct comparison with the company’s iPad line.

The reason the iPhone Duo is getting so much attention now is simple: Apple has finally put a price and a shape on its first foldable. The device has a 5.4-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch inner display, runs on iOS 27, and is meant to be read as more than a phone with a bend in the middle. It is being searched as a possible iPhone Duo iPhone 18 Pro alternative in the broadest sense of Apple buyers looking for a larger screen, but its starting price changes the equation immediately.

That price sits above every iPad model’s starting point. A standard iPad begins at $449, the iPad Mini at $599, the iPad Air at $699 and the iPad Pro at $1,199. Even the gap at the high end is telling: a fully loaded 2TB iPhone Duo costs $3,199, while the 2TB iPad Pro costs $2,299. Apple is not just selling a new form factor. It is asking buyers to pay a premium for folding glass, dual displays and phone software on hardware that overlaps with its tablets.

The contrast gets sharper in the details. The iPhone Duo weighs 254g, has two 48MP camera lenses on the back and can be configured with up to 2TB of storage. Every modern iPad has a lone 12MP lens, and the iPad line runs on iPadOS rather than iOS 27. There are also two separate App Stores for the iPhone Duo and the iPad, which means Apple is not treating them as the same device family even if they can occupy the same shopping decision.

That is the friction in Apple’s pitch: the iPhone Duo is being framed as a possible alternative to buying both an iPhone and an iPad Pro, yet its starting price is higher than any iPad model’s. Apple has given shoppers a device that can stretch from pocketable cover screen to tablet-like inner display, but it has not made the case that it replaces the cheaper tablet options for most buyers. For now, the iPhone Duo looks less like an iPad substitute than a new tier above it.
