Jaylen Watson showed up on the Rams injury report with a toe injury two days before the opener against the San Francisco 49ers, and he was listed as Did Not Practice on Tuesday. That is enough to make his status worth watching, even before a snap has been played.
The timing matters because Watson is not just another name on the sheet. He signed a three-year, $51 million contract this offseason, so a fresh injury this close to Week 1 lands directly on a player the Rams expected to lean on right away. He also has a long plane ride ahead, which at least gives him time to rest the toe before the game.
Tuesday’s report included five Rams starters with a Did Not Practice designation, and Watson was one of them. Myles Garrett was also on that list, but Sean McVay said Garrett will play against the 49ers. There was no similar indication yet for Byron Young, A.J. Jackson or Tyler Higbee, though the report did not show them as ruled out for Week 1.
That leaves Watson in a different place from Garrett and from the other starters who were flagged on Tuesday. A toe injury can be minor enough to manage or serious enough to change how a player moves, pushes off and absorbs contact, and those are the kinds of details that decide whether a starter can take the field. With Aaron Donald already out, the Rams do not have much margin for another hit to their opening-game depth chart.
The next real answer comes when the Rams move from practice reports to game day. Until then, Watson’s injury is the one that matters most, because it is the one that could still change whether a major offseason signing is available when the Rams open against the San Francisco 49ers.
