The Patriots could open in Seattle with as many as 8-10 new faces in the starting 44 compared with Super Bowl LX, a turnover that would make the first game look far different from February. The list of possible newcomers reaches across the roster and includes A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Eli Raridon, Elijah Ponder, Christian Elliss, Dre’Mont Jones and Kevin Byard.
That is why the search interest is there now: the opener is close, the rematch with the Seahawks is already being framed through roster change, and the Patriots are weighing just how much of last season’s title look still matters. Seattle, too, could have a new face on offense, with Jadarian Price set up to step in at running back after the departure of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker.
The possible turnover is not just cosmetic. In February, the starting defense had a pair in the secondary, but the opener could bring a three-safety set, and Nick Emmanwori’s status is still unsettled because of offseason ankle surgery. That leaves the Patriots’ back end and front seven linked: if one piece shifts, another has to cover for it.
The sharper problem is up front, where Harold Landry is still not playing and the edge depth does not look settled. Elijah Ponder flashed positively last year with four sacks, and that is part of why his name is in the conversation, but it also shows how thin the room remains if the Patriots head into the opener without another clear edge-rushing answer. The team has already shown a willingness to make do elsewhere, bringing in Corey Kiner after four players auditioned for the third running back spot and none of them made the grade.
That is the calculation now: the Patriots may be able to absorb a handful of new starters, but opening in Seattle with Landry still sidelined and the edge group still unsettled would leave the first test hanging on one question the roster has not answered yet — whether enough help arrives before kickoff.
