It is only a proposal, but it lands at a moment when Coleman’s standing in Buffalo has already been shaken by benchings and questions about whether he can become the player the Bills thought they were drafting.

Coleman was the No. 33 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but his first two seasons have produced 67 catches for 960 yards and eight touchdowns in 26 games, a line that has not matched the expectations attached to a second-round receiver. He said on May 19 that getting benched four games was “unacceptable” and added, “I know what I am here to do and what I am capable of doing.”
Knox’s pitch rests on a simple football logic. He wrote that the San Francisco 49ers already have question marks at wide receiver and that Coleman could use a fresh start. In his view, a change of scenery could create more chances for the Bills receiver while giving him a new chance in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. The proposed return is modest because Coleman has not yet forced the issue in Buffalo, and he has also spent stretches outside the game plan.
The friction is that Buffalo has not acted like a team ready to give up on him. Joe Brady said he turned down trade offers for Coleman despite his recent struggles, and that matters because it shows the Bills still see a reason to keep him around. Coleman has also been through the kind of discipline that changes how a staff views a young player: he was benched in 2024 for being late to team meetings, sat as a healthy scratch for three games, and later drew more scrutiny after another season in which his role was uneven.
There is also a larger team angle behind the rumor. Buffalo already traded a second-round pick to the Chicago Bears for DJ Moore and a 2026 fifth-round pick, a move that underlines how the Bills can value receiver help when they want it. At the same time, Moe Moton wrote on July 10 that Coleman faces palpable pressure entering his third season, and he noted that DJ Moore, Khalil Shakir and Dalton Kincaid will probably see most of the targets. That leaves Coleman in a narrow lane: he is entering the third season of a four-year, $10 million rookie contract, but he is still trying to win back trust.
The unresolved part is not whether the idea makes football sense. It is whether Buffalo would finally move on from a former first-round-caliber investment or keep betting that Coleman can still settle in and become the player his draft slot promised. For now, the rumor is a conversation starter, not a deal.
