Jeff Traylor begins the opener with a record that gives the day some shape. He is 4-2 in home openers and 3-3 in season openers at UTSA, a program that has built its own quick history by going from scratch in 2011 to full-fledged FBS membership by 2014. The numbers are plain enough. UTSA is 9-6 all-time in home openers and 10-5 in season openers, while it is 3-0 in season openers against an FCS opponent.
That is why Saturday matters beyond the novelty of the matchup. UTRGV arrives from its second season of football after a 44-0 shutout of UT Permian Basin in its opener last Saturday night, and the Vaqueros come in carrying the kind of early confidence that can make a first meeting harder to read than it looks on paper. UTSA, meanwhile, is trying to turn another opening day into another season that fits the program’s recent rhythm.
The Roadrunners have spent the last few years stacking milestones. They reached their first postseason game at the 2016 New Mexico Bowl, won their first conference championship in 2021 against WKU, repeated in 2022 against North Texas, and won their first bowl game in 2023 against Marshall in the Frisco Bowl. In 2024 they beat No. 25 Memphis for the program’s first top-25 win and later finished at 7-6 after beating Coastal Carolina in the Myrtle Beach Bowl, then followed that with a 57-20 win over FIU in the First Responder Bowl to cap a seven-win season in 2025.
The edge in this opener is not just that UTSA has done more for longer. It is that Traylor’s team is meeting a program still early in its own build, even after UTRGV’s 44-0 start. Saturday’s game is the first chance to see whether UTSA’s habit of handling openers holds up when the opponent is new, undefeated and already carrying one shutout into San Antonio, Texas.
By the time the two-hour pregame show gives way to kickoff, the question will no longer be whether this is a first meeting. It will be whether UTSA can make its 16th season feel like the next step in a familiar climb, or whether UTRGV can turn a fast start into something much harder to dismiss.
