Penn State opens its 2026 season against Marshall on Saturday, September 5, and the first snap will carry extra weight. Matt Campbell will coach his first game for the Nittany Lions when they host the Thundering Herd at West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa., with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. on FS1.
The matchup gives Penn State a clean starting point for its 140th football season, and it comes with the formality of the program’s 11th Stripe Out game. It is also Penn State’s third meeting with Marshall, a series the Nittany Lions have controlled from the start, winning 26-7 in 1929 and 65-0 in 1930.
Campbell arrives with a long track record behind him. He spent 10 seasons at Iowa State, leaving with a 72-55 record and a 56.7% winning percentage before being named Penn State’s 17th head coach on December 8, 2025. Penn State head coaches are 11-4-1 in debut games, a useful marker but not a guarantee when the first opponent brings back production from the year before.
Marshall enters after a 5-7 season in 2025, but the record does not tell the whole story. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson threw for 2,043 yards and 17 touchdowns while adding 660 rushing yards and six scores, and Boogie Trotter led the defense with 74 tackles and five interceptions. That kind of returning production gives Marshall a quarterback and a playmaker in the secondary who already know how to affect a game.
Penn State’s task is heavier than a normal opener because it is trying to blend a new coach with a roster that has been reworked. The program added 62 newcomers, including 40 transfers who have combined for 337 career collegiate starts, and Fifteen Nittany Lions were named to preseason award watch lists. The pieces are in place, but the first real answer comes Saturday afternoon.
For Campbell, the opener is not just a debut. It is the first public test of whether Penn State can look settled quickly against an opponent that has enough returning talent to make the game matter beyond ceremony. If the Nittany Lions are going to make the first chapter count, they have to do it immediately.
