Ram is moving into the full-size SUV fight with Ramcharger, a body-on-frame SUV aimed straight at the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, Ford Expedition and Ford Expedition Max. The new model is meant to give Ram a direct answer in the largest, most profitable part of the market.
That is why the search around Ram Suv is picking up now. Ram is betting that a full-size SUV can help it knock Chevrolet out of the Number 2 spot behind Ford, and the Ramcharger name is now attached to that push after first being expected for the extended-range version of the electric Ram 1500 before that model was renamed REV. The Ramcharger also carries old baggage: the name once belonged to a short-wheelbase Chevy K5 Blazer competitor with a removable roof.
The positioning is unusually broad. Ram can use Express and Big Horn at the entry end, then move up through Laramie, Limited and Tungsten for buyers who want more equipment and more price. At the top, Ramcharger Tungsten would overlap with Jeep Grand Wagoneer trim levels in the same battle for Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade buyers. Stellantis is rationalizing its full-size SUV lineup after the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer failed to pull enough shoppers away from Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Ford and Lincoln.
Under the skin, the new SUV would lean on familiar hardware. The DT platform began as the fifth-generation Ram pickup, then was revised for Jeep duty to accept an independent rear suspension. That architecture has already supported everything from Pentastar V-6 and Hurricane I-6 power to Hemi V-8 variants and the TRX’s supercharged Hellcat setup, which makes it hard to read the top SRT model as anything other than a near-certainty for a version of that same high-output formula. In other words, Ram is not starting from scratch. It is reusing a platform with a long paper trail and a performance ceiling high enough to make the claim believable.
There is still a built-in contradiction in the broader family strategy. Jeep has wisely avoided labeling any Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer Trail Rated, because there is no getting one over the Rubicon, and Ramcharger has to compete in a segment where image matters almost as much as size. A Ramcharger Rebel or RHO could add Quadra-Lift air suspension, an electronic limited-slip differential, a low-range transfer case, Selec-Terrain modes and skidplates to chase Tahoe Z71 and Expedition Tremor buyers, but the most important unanswered point remains timing. Ram is clearly preparing the vehicle in Warren, Michigan, alongside Ram 1500s and Jeep Grand Wagoneers, yet the official reveal and sales window are still not laid out. For now, the message is plain: Ram is no longer just testing the idea of a full-size SUV. It is building one to go after Chevrolet and Ford where they are strongest.
