Allen entered at 1-0 after beating No. 5 Duncanville 26-7, while No. 6 DeSoto came in 0-1 and ranked No. 24 after a 38-14 loss to No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas the previous week. Before the St. Thomas Aquinas game, three of DeSoto's four captains did not shake hands before the coin toss, and the DeSoto Independent School District athletic director, Dr. M.T. Tyeskie, later apologized. The team also apologized on social media, and Claude Mathis told The Dallas Morning News that his team had been subjected to racist comments before the game. For a program defending its Class 6A DII championship, the trip to Allen was supposed to reset the conversation. Instead, the game was already moving in the other direction by the time Storey picked off his second pass of the night and returned it to the DeSoto 18-yard line, setting up another Allen surge.
