Ketel Marte is back where the Arizona Diamondbacks want him, at second base, for Friday night’s opener against the Astros in Houston. It is a straight return to his defensive home after two games as the designated hitter and a planned day off.
The move matters because the Diamondbacks were set to begin a three-game series and Marte’s bat and glove both carry weight. He has a.761 OPS this year, and since coming back from the Injured List he has singled twice, walked once and been hit by a pitch in two games of action, a small sample that still shows he is getting back into rhythm.
Marte’s return to the field also comes after a rougher moment off it. He apologized to teammates for an unexcused August 17 absence at Fenway Park, then was used only as the DH in the first two games of the series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday and Tuesday before sitting out Wednesday as part of his return-to-play procedure. For Arizona, the timing of his return to second base suggests the club is ready to move on from the missed game and put him back in the middle of its daily work.
The defensive numbers help explain why. Marte posted +3 Fielding Run Value and +2 Outs Above Average this year, down from +8 Fielding Run Value and +8 Outs Above Average in 2024. That drop is enough to show the gap between a good season and the level he reached a year ago, which is why his stated goal of improving his defense and winning a Gold Glove ahead of the 2026 season matters now, not later.
Houston is not a National League opponent and not a direct obstacle to Arizona’s own playoff hopes, but the Diamondbacks are still in a chase where every game matters to some degree. That is why Marte’s placement back at second base is more than a lineup note: it is the club putting its regular shape back together at the start of a three-game series, with the simplest question now being whether he stays there through the rest of it.
